Why link previews matter for CTR

Your link preview is the ad — broken cards kill clicks

Social posts with optimized preview cards get ~40% higher click-through. A missing thumbnail makes even great content look like spam.

+40% CTR with optimized cards

A crisp 1200×630 image, a 50–60 character title, and a complete description turn a bare URL into a clickable unit. Same link, dramatically different traffic.

Broken thumbnails erode trust

Grey boxes, cropped logos, and “Untitled — login to view” tell readers the link is stale or sketchy. Most people will not click to find out otherwise.

Every platform crops differently

X wants 1.91:1 large cards, LinkedIn trims long titles, iMessage shows one line. Preview once here instead of post-delete-repost five times.

Open Graph best practices

Ship cards that survive every crawler

Four rules cover 95% of broken previews — dimensions, titles, caching, and the one Twitter tag everyone forgets.

1200×630 · 1.91:1 · <5MB

One image size rules them all

Export your og:image at 1200×630 px (1.91:1), absolute HTTPS URL, under 5MB — ideally under 1MB so slow crawlers do not time out. Keep headlines inside the center safe zone; X and LinkedIn crop edges aggressively, and square fallbacks center-crop even harder.

Title 50–60 · Desc 150–160

Title tag vs. og:title — write both deliberately

Your <title> serves Google; og:title serves social. Keep og:title at 50–60 characters, og:description at 150–160, and front-load the hook — X truncates past ~70 chars, LinkedIn past ~200, iMessage after one line. The audit above flags each live.

Cache-busting

Crawlers cache — plan the refresh

X holds cards ~7 days, LinkedIn ~a week, Facebook/WhatsApp until re-scraped. After fixing tags, re-scrape in each debugger and bump ?v=2 to force a fresh fetch. Never debug against a cached card and assume the tags are still broken.

summary_large_image beats summary, always

Without <meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">, X shrinks your 1200×630 art into a tiny thumb. One line buys the full-bleed timeline card — the generator includes it by default.

One previewer for every platform

Official debuggers are single-platform, login-gated, and slow. HeyMeta shows tags but not cards. Drops shows all six cards, live.

Free utility

Test open graph tags before your audience does

A two-minute check that saves a week of stale caches.

An open graph preview tool answers the question every marketer, founder, and developer asks after hitting publish: what will this link actually look like on social? A social share preview renders your og:title, og:description, and og:image exactly the way each crawler sees them — so you catch the cropped logo, the 90-character truncation, or the missing image before your launch post does.

Use this page as your twitter card validator online and linkedin link preview tool in one: flip between six realistic cards, run the dimension and length audit, then copy the generated snippet. Pair it with a free og image generator workflow — design once at 1200×630, host it on an edge CDN, reference it with an absolute URL — and every share unfurls correctly.

When the preview is pixel-perfect, ship it on infrastructure that keeps it that way: static website hosting with automatic OG images and edge caching, one-click ZIP to website deploys, shareable PDF to link pages with their own cards, and live interactive product demos — all starting on free website hosting.

FAQ

Open Graph questions, answered

Tags, missing images, cache lifetimes, and the perfect card size.

Open Graph tags are <meta> tags in your page <head> — og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url — that tell social platforms what title, preview text, and thumbnail to show when your link is shared. Twitter/X adds its own twitter:card tags on top. Without them, platforms guess from your body copy and usually guess wrong.
The usual culprits: the image is under 1200×630 px, over 5MB, blocked by robots.txt or a login wall, served over HTTP instead of HTTPS, or the crawler cached an older failed fetch. Fix the file, make the URL public and absolute (https://…), then force a re-scrape — LinkedIn caches aggressively for about 7 days without one.
X caches cards for roughly 7 days, LinkedIn holds previews for about a week, Facebook/WhatsApp cache until you force a re-scrape, and Slack/Discord cache per-URL until the unfurl is refreshed. During development, bust the cache by appending a query string (e.g. ?v=2) and re-running the debugger on each platform.
Use 1200×630 px (1.91:1 ratio) under 5MB — ideally under 1MB for fast crawler fetches. That single size renders cleanly on X large cards, LinkedIn feed posts, Slack unfurls, Discord embeds, and iMessage bubbles. Square 1:1 crops get center-cropped on X, so keep key text inside the middle 60% safe zone.
Keep og:title to 50–60 characters and og:description to 150–160 characters. X truncates titles past ~70 characters, LinkedIn cuts descriptions around 200, and iMessage shows barely one line. The live audit in the tool above flags truncation per platform before you ship.
Because each crawler has its own rules: X needs twitter:card set to summary_large_image for the big image layout, Slack ignores relative image URLs, and Discord requires an absolute HTTPS og:image. The generator above emits all three tag families together, so one snippet covers every platform.
Yes — one line makes the difference. X falls back to a tiny summary card without <meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">, even with a perfect og:image. Always ship both tag sets; it costs one line and doubles your click area on the timeline.
Re-scrape the URL in each official debugger after deploying fixed tags, and bump the URL (?v=2) if the old card persists. Crawlers also need a fast (<3s), public, HTTPS image — slow or gated images silently keep the stale card. Host the image on a CDN edge (like Drops) so every crawler fetches it in milliseconds.
